U.S. financial markets saw small overall gains on Tuesday, while media stocks showed little movement in a quiet trading day on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average improved 39.03, to 20,689.24. Nasdaq was up 3.93, to 5,898.61

Threshold Gives Way To A New Southern Oregon FM

A Class A assigned to the 97.7 MHz frequency in the Medford, Oregon, suburb of Butte Falls has signed on the air. The owner knew little, if anything, about the town before being awarded an FCC license for the station,  KORJ-FM . It didn’t matter:  Threshold Communications  partners  Jim Bryan and Ron Wulff were the lone bidders in a Commission auction for the brand-new station. “I didn’t know where Butte Falls was, but I knew it was somewhere in Southern Oregon,” Bryan told the Mail Tribune.  KORJ is airing a NAC/Smooth Jazz format, with the intent of reaching the Medford-Ashland, Oregon Nielsen Audio market. It joins eight AM stations and 18 FM stations in the county, as well as Josephine and Siskiyou county stations beamed in via translators.

‘MVP Silenced By A Swarm Of Bees!

GLENDALE, ARIZ. — Here’s a radio station live remote broadcast that will keep the C-Suite buzzing for quite some time. That’s because  Bonneville International ‘s  KMVP-FM “Arizona Sports 98.7” was stung and prevented from delivering a live broadcast yesterday in the Westgate Entertainment District as part of its NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship coverage in this western Phoenix suburb.

It’s Time To Get To Know ‘Gen Z’

Talkin’ ’bout my generation …  For years, “X” has marked the spot for advertisers and marketers seeking to maximize their ROI. This has involved, for the last 25 years or so, a focus on “Generation X” — a group of slackers that first came to the public’s collective consciousness as disaffected and exceedingly annoying. Thanks, Ben Stiller. He’s the Director of the 1994 not-so-cinematic classic  Reality Bites , featuring the hunk of the era — Ethan Hawke — and America’s favorite “weird facial expressions” actress, Winona Ryder.

This Is Only A Test: An ATSC 3.0 Watermarking Trial

An on-air test is now underway of new digital broadcasting technology that will help broadcasters tailor content to viewers and better measure audience activity. The test is a collaboration between the Pearl TV business alliance, FOX , NBC O&O WVIT-30 in Hartford, Univision and software company Verance , whose audio watermarking solution is a key component of the ATSC 3.0 next-generation television broadcast standard. Watermarking enables the foundational data protocol that triggers services such as interactivity, personalization and even advanced emergency alerting on televisions and other devices. Pearl TV Managing Director Anne Schelle commented, “One of the great benefits of next-generation broadcast TV will be the ability to customize content and merge the capability of the Internet with broadcast programming.” Pearl TV members, along with the four aforementioned parties, are participating in the test, which involves viewers in Phoenix; Orlando; Montgomery, Alabama; and Connecticut’s state capital. “We plan to evaluate how the watermark is deployed, how it is retained from transmitter to receiver, and what information can be gleaned from the testing process,” Schelle said
