Pandora Beats The Street, But Sees Dip In Listener Hours

Updated at 7pm Eastern Here’s the good news for beleaguered Pandora Media  shareholders: The company’s total consolidated revenue in Q2 was $376.8 million, a 10% year-over-year increase. Additionally, its gross profit increased to $133 million, from $126 million, in Q2, as its all-important advertising revenue improved to $278.2 million, from $265.1 million. That may not matter to shareholders come Tuesday’s Opening Bell on Wall Street: Pandora saw a net loss available to common shareholders of $289.6 million ($1.20) in Q2, compared to $76.3 million (33 cents per share) in Q2 2016. This includes a goodwill impairment charge to reflect a one-time write down related to the net assets of Ticketfly and other one-time expenses related to the financing transaction.

RMLC Responds To SESAC Discount Offer

Late last week, the Radio Music License Committee (RMLC) learned that RMLC-represented stations were awarded a more-than-60% discount off of the SESAC radio station license rate card. The substantial fee reduction applies for the license period January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2018. The RMLC points out that SESAC had offered stations that chose not to arbitrate only a 5% discount. “In contrast, many of the RMLC-Represented Stations that chose to participate in the arbitration, and that overpaid SESAC on an interim basis since 2016, will now receive a combined credit worth tens of millions of dollars,” the RMLC says

Pandora, Discovery Dip On Earnings Flops

It was a difficult day on Wall Street for both  Pandora Media  and  Discovery Communications , as both companies released second-quarter earnings that will likely see displeasure from many shareholders. Pandora saw its stock dip some 5.8%, to $8.95, ahead of a Q2 earnings report reflecting a drop in total listener hours and a much wider net loss. Meanwhile, Discovery shares finished the day off 8.2%, to $24.60, after the company failed to meet the Street on its earnings estimates—results that came as Discovery agreed to a $90 per-share acquisition of Scripps Interactive Networks. Also on Wall Street today,  Urban One  was down 7.5%, to $1.85, while  TEGNA  fell 3.5%, to $14.83. For a full look at today’s closing prices, please visit the Wall Street Report on the homepage of
